The Pedestal and the Game of Shame #1

August 6, 2008

For a while now whenever I play a video game that I really like, for the first time or the 100th time, I have this thing I do in my head like I’m writing for a video game magazine. I put the game on a pedestal and talk about why it’s so good, and then name another game as the Game of Shame. The Game of Shame can be related to the Pedestal game for very loose reasons. It can be in the same series, be released around the same time, for some reason I think of this game. Now, for the first time in history, The Pedestal and the Game of Shame.

Pedestal: Earthbound SNES 1995

I’ve just played Earthbound again for probably the 13th time since its release in 1995. This game is a huge adventure, with a unique sense of humor. When you get to Fourside, you think you’re far into the game, but that’s not even half-way through. The game’s menu and battle system are virtually identical to that of the Dragon Quest series. But Old English is replaced with quirky style and humor. I’ve read a lot of reviews from people who hate Earthbound, which is strange, because everyone in real life that I’ve talked to who has played it regard it as a gem. The soundtrack is definitely one of the most memorable of any game. The songs and in fact the entire game are heavily influenced by the Beatles in their psychedelic era. There are even some Beatles references in the game. And rumor has it that the drum beat played when the dungeon man follows you is sampled from the reprise of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. It really sounds like it!

The main character, Ness, in a sea of Happy Happyist who want to make everything blue. Wonder who they're based on?

For everything you could ever want to know about Earthbound or the other two games in the series, one of the best sites ever is starmen.net.

This is pretty interesting.

And now for the… Game of Shame

Usually the Game of Shame comes pretty easily to me, but Earthbound is a hard game to pair with a game of shame. Extremely hard. So I’ll just have to use another game I’ve played recently that I didn’t like too much.

Game of Shame: Equinox SNES 1994

I honestly didn’t play more than two minutes of this game before I gave up on it. This is the kind of game that your mom buys at a garage sale for you for 29 cents because she doesn’t know anything about video games and it collects dust for years. You never ever pick it up until you need to sell it for cash just like the person at the garage sale.

This is crap.

There’s not a lot to say aboout this game, except that it’s crap.

Sorry, this wasn’t a very good Pedestal and Game of Shame, but that’s because this is my first time doing it in written form and I need to get used to it. Plus, like I said earlier, it was hard to find a game of shame to pair with Earthbound.
